Ghost 7, a scary good shoe

August 23, 2014

The Ghost series is the popular favourite among runners with neutral to high arch feet. The latest Ghost 7 is a triple threat of balance, cushion and lightweight material. Definitely a “sure win” for its loyal fans, and a “must try” for Brooks newbies!

The Ghost 7 is not as cushioned as the Glycerin 12 for a reason. Some runners may feel that too much cushion is giving them something extra to lug around on their feet. Ghost 7 gives you the advantage of balance – not too much cushion to feel bulky, and yet its Biomogo DNA is good enough to give you a comfortable ride.

Biomogo DNA is the soft, cushion element of the shoe, that works together with the structure of the sole. The shoe’s sole now uses a horseshoe-shaped crash pad, with total contact with the ground. This means a better cushioned landing, and a smooth heel to toe transition.

The Ghost 7 is scary light, weighing in at only 10.4 ounces.

There you go. Balanced, cushioned, and lightweight. What more can you ask for.

Ghost 7, with all its added benefits, maintains the same price as its previous version, retailing at RM 459.

Glycerin 12 follows the Transcend

June 28, 2014

The Glycerin 12 is the first shoe to follow the footsteps on the Transcend. It adapts some of Transcend’s key technologies, that will certainly catch the attention of cushion lovers. If you like the float experience, and you have neutral feet, then you are in for a treat!

The main enhancement is the Super DNA. The Glycerin series is well known for its comfort and cushioning, because of its BioMoGo DNA. Glycerin 12 enhances it even further, into Super DNA. It now has 20% to 25% more cushioning than before!

The second enhancement to the comfort factor is new Ideal Pressure Zones. It optimizes pressure distribution from the heel to forefoot. The Ideal Pressure Zones are now more pronounced and clearly marked out.

Ideal Pressure Zones help to distribute pressure and enhance comfort.

Two other key technologies are worth mentioning: The Rounded Heel helps your body’s alignment by promoting a more efficient foot strike. And the upper maintains the 3D Fit Print technology, giving you a wrapped fit that conforms to your foot.

Some interesting fun facts about the Glycerin 12:

In terms of cushioning and comfort, the Glycerin 12 can be ranked at number 2 – just after the Transcend. If comfort and cushioning is most important to you, and if the Transcend bursts your wallet, then the Glycerin 12 is the perfect answer.

For runners who like it light, the Glycerin 12 is made lighter than ever! It closes the gap on the Ghost in its lightness, to a difference of only 0.5 ounces. That is like, 14 grams? Just about the weight of a few pre-run cashew nuts.

The Glycerin 12 retails at the same price as its previous version, at RM 559.

A closer look at the Diagonal Rollbar

September 1, 2013

Brooks shoes have a special feature to help counter overpronation issues. You can read more about the Diagonal Rollbar, Progressive Diagonal Rollbar and Extended Progressive Diagonal Rollbar here.

Let’s take a closer look at the Progressive Diagonal Rollbar.

3 layers of the Progressive Diagonal Rollbar

3 layers of the Progressive Diagonal Rollbar

It is made of 3 different midsole materials with 3 different densities. The innermost layer in white is the softest, followed by the middle layer in light gray, which is a little harder. The stiffest layer is the outermost layer in dark gray. This gives the shoe the additional structure it needs to neutralize the overpronating ankle.

How the 3 layers of the Progressive Diagonal Rollbar stack up

How the 3 layers of the Progressive Diagonal Rollbar stack up. The one on the right is a Brooks model.

The 3 layers of the Progressive Diagonal Rollbar are angled progressively. This way, it gives you the additional structure you need, without the discomfort of stiff midsoles.

Imagine a truck, that needs to be stopped from rolling to where it is not supposed to roll. A regular shoe probably has something similar to a rollbar, but it is not angled progressively. And it probably consists of only 1 stiff layer, instead of 3 layers. That will bring the truck to an abrupt and uncomfortable stop.

Now imagine if the truck can be stopped progressively, in 3 angled layers. The truck will still be stopped, without feeling like you are hitting a wall.

The Progressive Diagonal Rollbar is definitely a value added feature, that will benefit overpronators. If you usually experience discomfort or pain in your inner ankles after a run, look for a Brooks shoe in the Support or Control Category. The Adrenaline GTS is a popular favourite.

How shoes can prevent overpronation

August 26, 2013

Overpronation is what happens when your ankles roll inwards as you put your weight on your foot. If your ankles roll inwards while you are walking or running, then you are an overpronator.

Overpronators typically experience pain in the inner ankle area. Due to a misalignment of the ankles, compounded by the weight that is put on the foot at every stride, such injuries are common. However, choosing the correct shoe can help alleviate the pain or lessen such injuries.

Brooks shoes from the Guidance category have the Diagonal Rollbar. It is the grey matter at the medial area of the midsole. It is made of stiffer material, and it aligns your ankles back into a neutral position whenever your ankles roll in. The Diagonal Rollbar is useful if you have mild overpronation. Just a little guidance will do, to get your ankles back to where it should be.

If your feet has moderate overpronation (slightly more than mild, but not severe), then the Progressive Diagonal Rollbar will come in handy. This can be found from shoes in the Support category. See how the grey matter increases its support as your overpronation gets more pronounced?

If your feet are extremely flat and you have severe overpronation, the Extended Progressive Diagonal Rollbar comes to your rescue. It offers you maximum control, to get you “back on your feet”. Hence it is called a Control shoe.

If your feet do not have any overpronation, then you do not need any of those grey matter diagonal rollbars. Go for a Neutral shoe, since your feet do not need any corrective structures. You can enjoy a smooth ride, all round! No grey matter needed.

Get yourself a real rockin’ ride!

Glycerin 11 rocks your ride!

June 23, 2013

The latest Glycerin 11 is now lighter, and even more comfortable than it already is!

The most prominent upgrade is the 3D Fit Print overlay, that is used to make the upper. The 3D Fit Print adds structure to the shoe, and reduces weight at the same time! It is now almost as light as the Ghost.

3D Fit Print also gives you an enhanced hug-you-foot fit. Its upper wraps around your foot nicely, to reduce slipping. It is made to be seamless, without any stitching. Your foot will no longer be rubbed or irritated by the upper’s stitching.

The other new upgrade is the full ground contact outsole. The midfoot shank is now removed, and filled in with midsole and outsole material. Remember that stiff plastic piece under your midfoot? It is now taken out, and replaced with the same, soft material that runs from heel to toe. That gives you an extra smooth transition and maximum plushness!

Those are the two main upgrades in the Glycerin 11.

The other technologies that remain are the full length DNA technology, that incorporates non-newtonian fluid principles for adaptable cushioning. And also the Omega Flex Grooves at the forefoot and midfoot area, for enchanced flexibility. The caterpillar crash pad is extended to the midfoot and forefoot area, to better shock absorption. Running over small holes or bumps won’t shake you anymore. Think smooth. Think plush. Think Glycerin 11!

The Glycerin 11 retails at RM559. It’s a real rockin’ ride!
